It depends on what your definition of cure is, many consider success to be complete remission after 5 years. Also, the success rate of therapies is dependent on the type of leukemia as there are different types.

Leukemia is when the white blood cells in your blood, which are the immune cells, multiply too rapidly and can crowd out other cells and not mature completely. This is treated through the use of chemotherapy which are chemicals that kill cells which rapidly proliferate, making them more deadly to the leukemia cells. These chemicals can also damage your normal cells. The trick is to give you the highest amount of chemicals in the hope of killing as many cancer cells as possible, without causing too much damage to the normal cells. What a bone marrow transplant allows is for you too receive enough chemotherapy to wipe out all of the cells in your bone marrow, where white blood cells (leukemia cells), red blood cells, and platelets are made. This has the highest chance of stopping the cancer, however is deadly without these cells being replaced. The cells are replaced by those from bone marrow of a matched donor. The best case scenario is that the donor cells are not rejected by the recipient, they take up residence in the bones of the recipient and regenerate their blood cells, while all of the cancer cells were destroyed. This is not always sucessful and many patients can die from the disease, often infection, and from adverse effects of the chemotherapy.
