It is also known as "urticaria" which is an umbrella term for a number of skin conditions. It is generally inflammation of a region of your skin - mastcells will release chemicals including histamin which cause small blood vessels to leak and cause swelling in the surrounding tissue (angioedema). Those red patches and weals can be small, big, round or weird shaped and can last from minutes to hours. Usually it will start with itching and sometimes that might be all. The can be located pretty much anywhere on your body, from your eyelids to your toes.
As for the cause, that is no so easily determined. It can be a number of things but most often some form of allgery. Examples are a reaction to antibiotics, a vaccination, drugs such as morphine or cocain (they will make mast cells release histamine which will lead to this), an allergic reaction to food, an expression of a greater problem in your body such as rheumatism or even cancer, an autoimmune disease or a simple bacterial or viral infection of the skin including rection to a bug bite or simply stress of any nature!
Just as fast as it comes it might go away - if you get it often, you¡äll have to see a dermatologist to get treatment or even someone who is specialized in traditional chinese medicine or an acupuncture specialist. If you have oral antihistamines at hand - Benadryl will do since it contains diphenhydramine, anything that contains dextrochlorpheniramine or any other h1 blocker, or an antihistamine cream, you can treat it at home. I¡äm sure I¡äm leaving something out but I hope this helps you get a good idea of what it is and what to do about it!
