You can definitely try to get over it without medication. You need to start slowly, and gradually build up until you can walk right through a crowded mall without feeling any anxiety at all.

The first step is just visualizing - imagine yourself in a small group of maybe 5 people, having a conversation, smiling, acting confident.

Once you can imagine yourself in a situation without feeling anxiety, try it in real life. Go to a video store or gas station or somewhere that there will be a few people, but not many. Act exactly the way you had imagined - smile and be confident. Remind yourself that nothing bad is happening to you, you really can go in public and be around other people. It will take some practice, but do not give up! Take a close friend with you if that makes it easier.

If you are having great difficulty, you can see a psychologist. They will not give you medication, but will give you some behavioural training to help you get used to being in crowds. They will also help you figure out what is causing the anxiety in the first place, and help you deal with that. If you are still not feeling any better, you might want to try medication just for a short period of time. When you are on medication it may be easier for you to practice being in small crowds, which in turn will help you realize that nothing bad happens when you are in a crowd, and might make it easier when you are no longer on medication.
