Trying to find the natural remedy for dandruff (NO i dont want to know about anti dandruff shampoos, they cause hair loss later on) I want to know if anyone knows what the BODY is lacking that creates dandruff. Dandruff is usually caused by skin micro-organisms (most specifically Malassezia yeasts). Rarely dandruff can be a manifestation of an allergic reaction to chemicals in Hair Gels/Sprays,HairOils and sometimes even dandruff medications like ketoconazole.
There have been many strategies for the control of dandruff. Simply increasing shampooing will remove flakes. However, elimination of the fungus results in dramatic improvement. Regular shampooing with an anti-fungal product will not only treat but prevent recurrence. The most effective over-the-counter product (in the U.S.) is Nizoral (ketoconozole). As mentioned as above, in some folks it can cause more flaking as a side effect, but this is very rare with the OTC product. Nizoral is also available as a higher strength prescription product.
Some of the older products are effective as well - Selsun Blue and Head-and-Shoulders are commonly used and help many people.
If the flaking is caused by dry skin, hair oils (applied to the scalp) may help. If itching is intense try the OTC Scalpicin Lotion or if very severe use an OTC antihistamine such as Claritin or Benadryl for temporary relieve.
