This is removal of a kidney without an open incision. Instead what is called port sites are made -- 3 small openings and an instrument called a laparoscope is inserted inside. The kidney is brought out through a port site. A lot of procedures are done laparoscopically now, such as cholecystectomies (or gallbladder removals). These are less invasive and the healing time is a lot quicker. A laparoscopic nephrectomy is used for renal cell carcinoma, live donor transplants, etc. I have attached a page that I have used in my occupation for research and things. It even has illustrations. Hope this helps.
