May want to try your local library or the library in the closet larger community. Call. Ask if they have a book about spiders in the local area with photos so you can try to identify it.
If I knew which state you were talking about. I could have tried helping you search the web to see if there was any site that could help.
P.S. Thank you for clarifying the State involved. I did a search for ¡°spiders in California¡±. Below is some information I was able to glean from my search. You could so a similar search if you need more information besides what I provided.
Brown recluse and other recluse spiders in California reside only in Southern California, so you can rule those out altogether.
This page lists type of spiders that are most likely to cause the symptoms you described when they bite as well as other insect that can be guilty.
