Hi Duttie. I have had Celiac Disease (CD) my entire life (I am 52 years old). Sadly, it was not properly diagnosed until last year (had to figure it out myself).
Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. This is the part of the gut where most of your digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs.
CD is caused by an allergic reaction to certain proteins in grains (wheat, rye and barley) called glutens/gliadins. The only treatment is total avoidance of these foods in the diet.
CD can cause a wide variety of symptoms. The disease is now known to occur in about 1 person in 100, but here in the U.S. only about 3% of people with the disease get properly diagnosed (me, for example). The classic symptoms include diarrhea and weight loss, but these are actually not the most common symptoms. Unexplained fatigue is the most common symptom. Many patients are actually over weight.
